My Little AffairWeddings are always a family affair involving everyone, from the oldest down to the youngest member of each spouse’s household. Handling children during weddings especially during the reception can be a challenging task. It is sometimes hard to imagine that a family’s “bundle of joy” can also be the family’s “bundle of trouble” during that special day, here are some pointers to help you handle these little affairs. Children in receptions. The wedding ceremony is just the first part of the affair. The real challenge when dealing with children at weddings is during the reception. If children are invited to the reception, you want to be sure that they are kept entertained. This way, both the children and their parents can enjoy the reception. Here are a few suggestions to keep the little ones busy: • Consider a separate reception room across the hall or attached to the main ballroom with child-friendly entertainment- perhaps a juggler, or a magician, or a mascot. This room can even feature a knee-high buffet full of their favorite treats, such as pizza, burgers, fries, chicken tenders, hotdogs, and nuggets- even ice cream. • Have a children’s table that has crayons, paper, building blocks, and some games. You can ask the parents to ring their child’s favorite game. Invite them to draw pictures of the wedding or to make cards wishing you well in your marriage. • If you’re having a hotel reception, book one hotel room for all of the kids and the “yaya’s”. Bring a VCR or DVD and some movies; a Nintendo or Playstation; or some board games. This way, if they get tired , they can always crash on the bed. • Plan a scavenger hunt for the kids, or, if you have extra space, a sports game. This is a great idea for outdoor receptions. Talk to your coordinators about this. • A fun and cute thing to do would be to have a children’s dance, one in which you reserve one song for dancing with the kids- the bride with the boys, and the groom with the girls. This can be very memorable and meaningful for them. Guests will also find this adorable. If you would like to make your wedding child-friendly, let everyone know this, and they will be sure to help you out by coming up with ideas on how to entertain them, finding babysitters, and bringing items necessary for their comfort.
